Join us at the Society for Marine Mammology Conference
For the first time in its 50+ year history, the Society for Marine Mammalogy will convene in Australia. This November 11th – 15th, the SMM 2024 Biennial Conference in Perth, Western Australia, will bring together some of the world’s leading marine mammal scientists, with over 1,300 participants from 80 countries expected to attend.
Space is a key tool to help protect nature and, as a provider of space-based technologies, CLS supports the scientific community, NGOs and governments in reaching this goal. Our expert, Oliver Palin, from CLS Oceania will be attending the conference.
How can space help?
Monitoring Bidiversity
The numbers of many species is decreasing at an alarming rate and the number of marine families listed as endangered, such as whales, dolphins and manatees, are on the rise.
Argos services uses cutting edge technology such as
- near real-time location and data collection via Kinéis’ global connectivity
- as well as access to Earth Observation data,
- modeling
- and Artificial Intelligence
to provide scientists with various tools to help analyze changes and understand behavior.
Limiting incidental catching
CLS provides advanced solutions for marine species monitoring, utilizing tagging data to develop precise models that can predict the spatiotemporal distribution of species.
By analyzing habitat preferences and migration patterns, CLS’ numerical models enable authorities to make informed decisions about managing interactions between protected species and commercial fisheries.
These models allow for dynamic management strategies, such as temporarily prohibiting fishing in areas where the likelihood of interactions is high. This approach can significantly reduce incidental catches while minimizing the impact on fishing operations, balancing conservation efforts with industry needs.
A new generation of Argos Services
A new generation of Argos Services are on their way with the upcoming constellation of 25 nanosatellites from our Space IoT partner Kinéis, 10 of which are already successfully in orbit.
Once complete, the constellation will transform the global connectivity it provides for our Argos Services leading to smarter and more sustainable practices by enabling more precise, responsive, and comprehensive wildlife monitoring.
Don’t forget to set up a meeting with Oliver to discover what this means for you!
