Argos reveals migration and dive behavior of sea turtles in the North Pacific
Argos satellite telemetry studies over the last two decades revealed that sea turtles undertake wide-range migration, and often trans-oceanic migration. Moreover, advanced Argos PTT (Platform Transmitter Terminal) provide fine-scale information of dive behavior, and the fact that they are capable of diving into deep waters. At the 2nd Argos Asian Wildlife Tracking Workshop, Dr. Junichi Okuyama will introduce Argos tracking projects focusing on two sea turtle species; leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) and loggerhead turtle (Carreta caretta) in the North Pacific. These tracking studies revealed the foraging hotspots and thermal strategy of leatherback turtles in the North Pacific, and also the migration dichotomy of loggerhead turtles nesting at the Japanese archipelago.
Dr. Junichi Okuyama
Dr. Junichi Okuyama is a researcher at the Research Center for Subtropical Fisheries, Seikai National Fisheries Research Institute, Fisheries Research Agency, Japan. He specializes in behavioral ecology, behavioral physiology and conservation biology of marine organisms including sea turtles. His main research methods are bio-logging and biotelemetry. His current interest is to categorize/ assume unobservable underwater behavior of marine animals using bio-logging data and machine learning. He also works on how external (environmental) and/or internal (physiological) factors affect on the behavior of marine organisms.
