iSTAR Project

Dec 9, 2014

This male Southern elephant seal was tagged on the Edwards Islands as part of the iSTAR project. A telemetry tag designed by the Sea Mammal Research Unit is attached to fur on its head with epoxy glue. The tag, which sends back ocean temperature and salinity profiles via the Argos satellite system, is designed to fall off when the animal next sheds its fur at the annual molt.

The iSTAR programme is a suite of four research projects designed to tackle big questions from different scientific perspectives.  Their work is essential for informing the economic and policy decisions that enable society to live with and adapt to environmental change.
