Tracking

Argos tracks any moving station fitted with an Argos transmitter for scientists and governments. Several positions collected over a fixed period of time can be used to monitor the route of a fishing vessel, large migrations of birds and other animals, oceanographic drifting buoys and their route through the ocean based on currents… and many other applications.

Trajectories (or tracking data) are made available via a specially designed website, where they are displayed on maps, in tables or charts. They can also be received automatically by email, directly through mapping software, fax or cd-rom.

Monitoring

Argos provides environmental monitoring from remote stations, either fixed or mobile, fitted with an Argos transmitter. Sensors on Argos platforms collect data on atmospheric pressure, sea temperature, animal heart rates, alarm management or water level of a river, for example.

Users program their transmitters and choose adequate sensors for the type of observations they need.
Collecting observations is especially useful in creating comprehensive global data sets that are used by people working together around the world on the same or similar topics.

As with tracking, data is made available via a website or sent to users automatically.
