Eric Stéphan of APECS explains monitoring of basking sharks

Sep 15, 2016

APECS (Association for the study and conservation of selachians) is a Brittany-based organization with a scientific and educational mission. It acts in favor of the conservation of sharks, rays and marine ecosystems using participatory science techniques, including on-site observations from everyday citizens. Their fieldwork also includes Argos satellite telemetry.

Eric Stéphan, project manager for the association, explains how Argos transmitters can be used to track basking sharks at a conference on the “Quai des Sciences” in Brest, France, in July 2016. The Argos system allows his organization to learn more about the behavior of basking sharks, which is still a mystery to science. APECS association works with Argos to understand and protect this species.
